A hypermedia document contains INFORMATION that you may navigate through.
There are usually multiple paths you can take as you journey through the information.
The information may appear in several formats :- text, graphics, sound, movies
Hypermedia is non-linear. Readers can explore cross-references as they desire.
It also means that the same document may serve different audiences.
Here are some examples of how hypermedia may be used.
Cross-referenced documents make hypermedia a useful source of reference material.
Readers can explore the documents by following the path that best suits them.
A picture is worth a thousand words. Hypermedia also includes sound, video.......
Hypermedia may even be a good way to get information about your product across.
Potential users of your product can explore the features that interest them.
And it can be a useful way of distributing or receiving various types of information.
These slides are NOT hypermedia. (One day, time permitting.................)
Instead of information only existing on your local disk, or a small network.........
Documents can be distributed around the world and linked together.
Now all this forms one very big, and very powerful information database!!!!
You can use Mosaic (Mac, Windows, X) or Cello to view this information.
Of course, you must have your computer connected to the Internet.
Global Hypermedia is based on World-Wide Web Hypermedia Servers.
These servers distribute HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) documents.
HTML documents are simply plain text documents with special tags.
They may be created using any text editor, including VI, notepad, and lots of others.
The document tags tell the viewer how to display the information.
They also provide information on where to retrieve related documents from.
HTML Hyperedit (this package!) can be used to easily create HTML documents.
You can load in a plain text document, and convert it to HTML using the controls.
This means that you don't have to remember the format of all of the HTML tags.
Think about how you will present the information in a logical order.
Make logical and intuitive links within your documents.
Too many links can be very confusing. Make sure each has a purpose.
One good method is to organise your documents into two categories.
Detailed documents shouldn't contain many links, but may be many pages.
Overview documents should be short, easy to read and contain links to more details.
Press EXIT and select HTML HyperEdit Tutorial from the Help menu.
